Initial Buckeye Prep Team Power Rankings Released

Below is a link to our initial release of our 2019 Buckeye Prep Power Rankings. Over the course of the season we will use the following criteria to update our rankings: head to head results; results from common opponents; margin of victory; final placements in tournaments; number of ranked players on a roster; and level of competition played. Unfortunately, many of the top teams in the state fail to play against each other during the season.  This happens for several reasons.  In some cases it’s just fate, as teams lose early in a tournament and just don’t meet, while some teams intentionally avoid playing in some of the better tournaments where that may be forced to play other top teams in the state.  We will monitor that situation and factor it in accordingly. At the end of the day, teams and programs know where the competition is playing! In addition, although we attempted to use historical data from previous seasons, that’s difficult because of the high roster turnovers as players change teams.  Also, in many cases, players grow and get better, which impacts a team’s overall talent level. I

Because we can’t be present at every event, we must rely on information from a network of coaches and sources around the state.  In order to produce credible updates, we need coaches and parents to send us accurate and unbiased information at the conclusion of weekend tournaments.  To this end, we have produced a “Tournament Results Reporting Form” designed to capture the information we need to update our rankings and produce feature stories for the website.  If we can get coaches and parents to buy in and put forth the effort to get the information we need, then we can more accurately track both team and individual progress.  This will help insure that teams and players get credit for their efforts.  At the end of the day, if your team is not playing in the top events against the top teams, and is not providing us with your team’s results, you can’t complain about where your team is ranked (or not ranked)!

It should go without saying that we have done our best to be fair and accurate with our rankings.  We mean no disrespect to any team with where we have them ranked.  If you feel you have been unfairly ranked, simply enter tournaments where the ranked teams are playing and beat them.   Our initial release is based on what we know at this point and in some case based on a team's raining last season.  As information flows in about who beat whom, we will update the information almost daily.

If your team is unranked or under ranked and you have beaten some ranked teams, simply forward that information to us, we will verify it, them update our rankings. Because so many of the top teams will be attending our Buckeye Prep Invitational Tournament this weekend, there could be a shake up in our rankings very quickly . We’re excited about this project and we hope it inspires and motivates players, coaches and parents to seek out the highest competition possible and elevate to level of play in the state.  Finally, please feel free to offer your feedback at, and please remember, we put the rankings together as a FUN way for teams to follow the season's progress of Ohio teams.  Let the debate begin!!

  1. Hey, Rob. Great stuff. Great tourney last weekend. I do have a question. What's the deal with Superfriends and North Coast in the 7th grade standings?

Superfriends isn't an Ohio team and I don't see them ranked in the 6th grade, where they won handedly. As far as NCBC 2024, are we sure they have a team right now?

  2. I'm not sure how they come come up with these rankings. Our team gets zero recognition when Allen Elite that we beat in bracket play by 18 gets an honorable mention. All Ohio Red Hamrick beat us 45-40 in pool play and we did not play great ball at all. We beat them 3 out of 5 and they are 13. We played step for step with KPA Red until last couple minutes they went on a run and gapped the score on us and that's a top 5. But they are a legit team I believe. I have 2 guards that never got a look at because of the balance and teamwork on my team. If you don't play selfish ball and put a big point total up then you dont get noticed I guess. This is our 3rd Tournament of the year. An overall record of 11-4 and winning the first 2 at home (LeRon King Classic in Huntington WV and Fastbreak Shootout by Tournament Time in Huntington WV).Only losses are to #4 KPA Red, #13 All Ohio Red Hamrick, Nine3Seven who won the silver bracket in Buckeye Prep and we lost to them in overtime, then a fluke loss to Team Alpha from Charleston WV at home. As far as player recognition just ask anyone who has played Tri State Warriors 5th grade and they will tell you about our guards. Just think if your gonna rank and give credit you gotta get it right. Were not great by any standards but these boys have worked hard enough last 2 years to at least get some recognition. Last years record was 19-5 through 6 Tournaments winning 3 and finishing runner up in 2 more. Only time we didn't make championship game was Dru Joyce in Akron and we lost to #3 ranked Ohio Rebels 42-39 and they won the division with nobody else giving them half the game we did. Do some more homework before you just put out the bigger names everyone knows. Sometimes the small town kids will surprise you!!!

  3. In 7th grade, the same team is shown as #2 and #17. S/B #2.

  4. Tri State Warriors 5th grade won the Gold division at Bearcat Classic this past weekend. Pool play they beat Club Ohio Basketball 37-14 and Ginn Elite 58-55. Round 1 in Bracket play they beat PAL TTP 2026 48-46. Championship game they beat Miller Factory 46-41 after trailing the whole 1st half and being down 5 at halftime.

  5. Another weekend of Tri State Warriors 5th grade playing and beating ranked teams without even getting an HM. Went to Dru Joyce after winning Gold at Bearcat and beat Ohio Stars Elite Finn Elite (again) and SMAC Flight before losing semi finals to Stampede Black from Florida 49-47. These people are watching the wrong teams lol
