Nike Grassrooots Tournament-Day 2

With the Ohio high school basketball season officially in the books, it's now time to turn our attention the AAU ball. This weekend, Jerry Watson's Grassroots tournament tipped of in Columbus. I had a chance to spend a couple of hours at the tournament and catch some of the action. From what I could tell, some of the young Cincinnati-area teams were dominating play. The 6th grade Elite Cavaliers were having their way on day 2, as they totally out classed a local All-Ohio team. In addition, the 7th grade Cincinnati Knights easily defeated All-Ohio Allocco. Buckeye Prep's 8th grade team handled Devine Thunder. In the 9th grade division, All-Ohio Red and the Cincinnati Lakers are on a collision course, as both teams won their Saturday games. In terms of individual performances, the following players caught my eye: DJ Wingfield (Team Jordan) Ronnie Williams & Kevin Fischer (8th Buckeye Prep), Nigel Hayes and Keon Johnson (All-Ohio), Tyreke Johnson and Leon Davis (Elite Cavilers), AJ Harris and Chris Moxley (Cincinnati Knights). Stayed tuned to Buckeye Prep for the final results of the tournament.

  1. I understand that you guys are more cordial to Ohio players, but if you said that A.J. Harris and and Chris Moxley caught your eye,I have to respectfully challenge the legitamacy of your website. I witnessed the Cincinnati Knights 7th grade visably frustrated with the tough and consistant play of the Detroit Family. Particularly, at the point guard position. Franklin Greene, along with Shaun Lewis who both made the Nike Grass Roots All-Ohio, All Tournament Team, clearly outplayed AJ Harris and Chris Moxley in the Championship game.I've never seen the Knights head coach so frustrated. I'm from Ohio, but I have to give credit, where credit is due. Those Michigan kids will be a force to be reckoned with at Nationals.

  2. ummm this is chris moxley and in the states we beat them by over 50 points soooooo you might want to take that national thing back.

  3. WOW, I dont understand when people see frustration vs taunting players. The detroit team taunted the Knights Players to the point the detroit team wanted to resort to street ball. So give street credit where its due.If you think that is what basketball is about then you will keep getting the same results. Rude 13 year olds in a grown man's face at half time. MaCio Teague as well as A.J. Harris and Dahmere played very well in that game. The core of the team has absolutely NO fear when it comes to playing the game. So check webster's dictionary when you want to compare frustration and taunting. Either way, the Knights came out on top. And always will because they are humble, SMART athletes. Not just ball players. Would love to see a rematch, playing straight up basketball.

  5. I would love to see a rematch as well. I think it would be a god one as long as the kids play basketball. The Knights faired very well at Nationals this year ranking #2. Does anyone know what the Detroit team did at nationals? Not being sarcastic, I am truly curious, they have a good team wish them the best, but will always be for that BLACK AND GOLD. CK U KNOW! :+)

  6. .... Read previous comment from anonymous above.. I am hearing good things about the kid MaCio Teague. He is out of the Cincinnati area. I hear he is athletic fundamentally skilled player. Most importantly good grades. Some of these kids you are reading about wont be around to play because of their grades and thats sad. I am going to try to find out who this Teague kid is. I will be at the Buckeye Prep showcase in September, if someone reads this, please send him an invite!

  7. I like MaCio’s game and I hope he can make the showcase. In fact, if a player has been identified as a “Top Player” on this website, and/or the players plays on one of the top AAU teams in the area, or he attended a previous showcase, he automatically has an invitation. I often work thru AAU coaches who don’t always communicate with their players that they have been invited. If you meet the above criteria, please email me at Taylorobe@aol.com and I will send you an invitation and registration forms. I must know by the 27th.

  9. You are too funny. You were in the game thats why you are making the comments. I am a sideliner (adult) with no bias opinion. Giving credit where credit is due. As far as pumping up the one kid he scored 32 points in a middle school game. Go to his facebook. When I coached AAU basketball onething I expected from my players and thats to get better as the season goes on. Seems that is what happened in the CK case. I dont get into putting kids(players down) You all have a good team. I wont take that from you. But the CK ranking #2 in the nation is what counts in EXPOSURE , NOT a game that was played in March. I hope you keep developing into a great athlete BUT scholar first. I wish you well this school year.
