Buckeye Prep Elite Showcase Rankings

Below is a link to the Buckeye Prep Elite Showcase Rankings. The lists were compiled based on the player ranking sheets submitted by the coaches.  For the most part, the Top 20 list represents those players ranked 1st or 2nd by the coach. The Top 40 list is made up of players ranked 3rd & 4th on their respective teams. Also, the names are listed in alphabetical order. In terms of the other lists, the coaches choose those players as well. As you will see, some coaches failed to select players for specialty awards.  I will be adding additional grades as they are completed.

  1. I believe it is important to note that these rankings are by TEAMS, so if you were on a team that happened to have a lot of good athletes, you could have easily fallen outside of the top 4. While I know Rob did his best to divide up the top talent, there were a few teams that had more top talent (and popular) kids, thus preventing others that shined from breaking out. It's unfortunate because there were some great kids there hustling but they didn't make the cut for this event. I recognize that no team assignments are perfect, but I also noted there were quite of few kids there that were not "elite" and probably shouldn't have been at an elite showcase. I am sure it was a good experience for them though. At the beginning Rob's instructions were that every kid had to earn his place, but I think there were some instances this weekend where a few of the "popular kids" did not earn their place on the All Star Teams. They may have earned due to playing history to be on the North/South rosters but some did not perform in their top 2-3 on their team at the showcase. Overall, good event.

  2. This is true but there is also a flip side to your point. I also witnessed some talented kids on teams that were so outmaned that these kids didn't really even have a chance to shine - it goes both ways. The event was handled very well though. There is no getting around a little "luck of the draw". The bottom line is that we just have to keep telling our kids to keep working harder. Rob did a great job and this was a first class event. There is no way that you will keep every kid (and parent) happy.

  3. I think kids 15-60 are similiar in skill, so depending upon how the weekend goes can change rank outcomes. Some coaches have affinity for big men others guards. Did you have the best player on the other team guard you.

An example would be Garrett Tipton. He played in the north south allstar and is a very good player. He played well but didnt blow it up this weekend. Is he a top 40 player? sure. But did he play like a top 4 player on his team this particuliar weekend? I guess thats debatable. Im sure there are several other examples on both sides of the coin. It was still a good event.

  4. YOU GUYS NEED TO GO BACK AND REVIEW THE TOP TEN RANKINS. THE ALL STAR GAME I THINK SOME OF THE KIDS THAT WAS PICKED DIDNT PLAY WELL AND SOME OF THE KIDS THAT WAS TEAM PLAYERS AND MOST CONSIST DIDNT GET PICKED. ITS A KID I KNOW THAT PUT UP GREAT NUMBERS PLAYED HELLA DEFENCE AND KEPT THE SOUTH TEAM TOGETHER TO WIN THE NORTH VS. SOUTH TITLE AND EVEN PLAYED HIS HEART OUT IN THE SUNDAY ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM IM NOT SAYING ANY NAMES BUT I THINK HE IS VERY WELL OVER LOOKED FOR WHT HE DID ON THE COURT AND HIS GOOD ATTITUDE. COME JUDGES GO BACK AND CHANGE SOME OF THE TOP TEN RANKINGS. AND HE IS FROM DAYTON OHIO

  5. You guy have to read (see above)!

"The lists were compiled based on the player ranking sheets submitted by the coaches. For the most part, the Top 20 list represents those players ranked 1st or 2nd by the coach. The Top 40 list is made up of players ranked 3rd & 4th on their respective teams."

There are a number of ways to approach ranking at an event like this. The media can do it, the director can do it, or the coaches can do it. I chose the coaches. For my purposes, the coaches saw these kids more than I did (I'm an administrator for the weekend); consequently, they are in the best situation to assess the level of play. In general, all #1 ranked players on their respective teams were top 10; number 2 ranked players were top 20, etc. A player could have been the 3rd best player in the state and at the event, but a #3 ranking by the coach this weekend gets you a top 30, and may not get you into an all-star game; it’s that simple.

Because this event was stacked, teams were stacked; consequently, a number of very talented kids who played well this weekend did not make all-star games or receive rankings that were reflective of their talent. It’s often the luck of the draw in terms of what team you get placed on. If you come to this event, you are going to play against the best, and you are going to put your cred/rep on the line; there is no way around it. In addition, quite often, a coach's perspective of a kid's play and talent is different than that of their parents. At the end of the day, to make this event happen and to accommodate the many kids who want to attend, I had to convince 27 guys to give up their weekend to serve as coaches. I provide very specific instructions relative to what I need, and for the most part, they comply. Some don’t, but I have to live with some of that. I have to trust their evaluations and decisions. They do a tough job, and like me, they have to deal with difficult parents who have their own agendas and perspectives. If you are so inclined, feel free to volunteer at the March event and get a taste of what it’s all about on the inside.

For those who are truly objective and possess the right perspective, there are several examples of the system working just fine. For those people who are not very objective, and cannot find much to be positive about regardless of what we do, there are examples of that as well. At the end of the day, how a person perceives what’s happing around them often says more about that person’s perceptions than it does what’s actually happening around them. Either you view life through positive lens or you view life through jaded lens. Ask yourself how you \view life! For every 1 negative read, there are 50 positive you don’t read.

  6. Just because a player did not make an all-star team does not mean they did not get exposure! The many scouts at the event saw a lot of kids, some of whom will receive write ups that will either be published and/or sent to college coaches. Exposure is a dynamic thing that is greater than 1 all-star game. Unfortunately, a lot of people really don't understand the system and how things work. Too much emotion!!

  7. Hey Rob this is Antwuan Johnson father first and foremost this was the best tournament Antwuan has participated in i see people on here complaining about the rankings. I thought Antwuan deserved alot of things but unfortunately he didnt get picked for those awards so we talked and he said he would do better next time.so keep on having these events i love the challenge

  8. Two things; I love it when I know who I'm debating with (Thanks for the name)! Secondly, that's what parents should do with disappointment; challenge the kids and foster personal responsibility. That's how I raised my 2 sons. We never complained about rankings, all-star games snubs, etc; we went to the gym the following night and went to work. We went to over 50 showcases and camps across the country and put work in. Consequently, I'm not real impressed with all the crying and whining. Our approach must have worked, as both sons played/or is playing college ball, and my investment was returned with free college tuition for both. Been a parent, spent my money, sat in the gyms across the country. Sorry, I’m not impressed!!

    2. Do any players receive credit for not gunning? It seems that after Rob gives his spill about teamwork, not gunning, making the pass to an open teammate and over excessive dribbling...those seem to be the majority of guys selected into the all star games. I think it needs to be a clear understanding to anyone that plans to attend any upcoming events on what the scouts at the events are looking for and the criteria for making the an all star team. You have a lot of talent in Ohio that are overlooked in your events do to ball hogs. Their are a lot of talented players that attend these events but I feel they are not learning the basic fundamentals of basketball. You have kids making the all star game on losing teams. Some of these kids selected as all stars are the reason for their teams losses.

  11. It's an "elite showcase," has always been; will always be! If you want to become and elite player, we try to facilitate that. If you want to play against the elite player; they are here. If you want to complain about the love elite players receive, this is not the event for you. In my experience, everybody wants their son to be an elite player, but they hate on elite players. I increased the fee $25 this year and added a second day that included a first ever skill and drills segment for 2 hours and I purchased additional awards for added recognition. I also added 5 elite level all-star games at no additional charge, but at considerable expense. If you are complaining about another $25, then keep it; this event is not for you. Find a local event where your son can dominate, where you can get in on a budget and save a few extra dollars because you don't need a jersey, you don't need a nice, safe facility with 2 qualified referees, and where the host will not provide you and your son all the free drinks you can carry for 2 days! The Sunday format is the same as it has always been. Here is a clue for the uniformed; no elite players; no scouting services. No scouting services; no exposure. No exposure, no interest. I got guys in here to watch and evlauate kids. This is my last response. If you have a questions for me, call me at 614-203-2929 or email me at Taylorobe@aol.com. One more time; this event is not for everybody!

  12. WoW............ I thought the event was great for my players. The talent level was very good. The problem is some parents wont tell there kids the truth about there skill set!!!! They wont say( son you have to work at the game to be good at the game) They would rather blame Rob of the coaches etc....

  13. I love Keith's game. Kid sure can play. X is super smooth as well. Rodrick is fun to watch. in the 8th grade i think the kid to watch at PG is Tommy Schmock. That kid stood out all weekend, best left hand of all them.

  14. This is the first time I've read this comment section and it's embarrassing. I feel bad that these kids will be reading this, and I would suggest maybe eliminating the ability to comment for the best interest of the kids and probably for Rob's own sanity. You name droppers should be ashamed of yourselves. Bottom line, there's early bloomers and late bloomers based on kids growth patterns and maturity. I'm talking middle school kids even up into 10th grade. There are several hundred kids in Ohio and each and every state that will pass up a lot of these kids physically. If they read these comments and for some reason give up because they don't have a parent or a mentor to keep pushing them to work with positive reinforcement, then we all lose. I'm a prime example. I received zero recognition in middle school through 9th and even 10th grade. I sat the end of the bench and some of the players who actually played were "expected" to play beyond High School. I'm one of 2 players on that team that went and played D1 ball and the only one that was drafted to play overseas. My point is, for those kids who are reading this and are not getting recognition. Use this opportunity to stick it right back in some of their faces. It's ok if you get a chip on your shoulder. It'll be bitter sweet in the end. GO TO WORK!!!

  19. This showcase really gives the Big Name AAU Clubs a chance to take kids from other programs too!!!! When that kid was bad, where was All Ohio etc...then? That club who took the time to develope that player gets dumped. Then sponsored clubs gets all the credit for a player they never put time into!!!!
