Nike Grassroots Day II Recap

C. Guess, C. Stringer, D Holloway, C. Woodside, A. Harris, T. Watkins, S. Cherry, B. Fort & C. Rankin
We spent the day at Reynoldsburg High School for day II of the Nike Grassroots Tournament. Early, we watched an 8th grade EBA Hoops team, pull out a close 56-56 win over a Columbus-based Garver Grizzlies. The stars of the game were Storm Cherry (5’5/PG/2019/Akron) and Andre Harris (6’0/P/SG/2019/Cleveland), who finished with 14 and 15 points, respectively.  We were really impressed with Coach Chris Anthony’s 2019 Ohio Bulldogs squad.  The team is well constructed with solid guard play, scoring wings and quality bigs. The game wasn’t much to watch as the Bulldogs easily defeated Pittsburgh, PA-based GPU, but we were impressed with the play of Dorian Holloway (6’0/WF/2019/Columbus), Treohn Watkins (5’9/SG/Columbus) and Ben Fort (6’0/PG/Reynoldsburg).  We have heard good things about each of these players previously, and what we saw on Saturday confirmed they are quality players.

Buckeye Prep-Lyshe started slow against Ohio Legacy (2018), but stepped on the gas late and pulled away to collect a comfortable 47-24 win. Collin Woodside (6’5/PF/2018/Lancaster) was a beast in the paint and finished with a game high 13 points, while Chase Rankin (5’9/PG/2018/Gahanna) stayed in the paint, drew fouls and hit his free throws to the tune of 12 points.  Buckeye Prep would go on to win their second game of the day to finish second in their pool and advance to bracket play.  All-Ohio Red’s 2019 team had an easy go against All-Ohio Lima Northwest. Chris’Sean Stringer (6’3/WF/2019/Cincinnati) was the high man in the win. Finally, All-Ohio’s 2018 team cruised to a lopsided win over CG4L.  The story of the game was the explosive play of Christian Guess (6’4/SG/2018/Cleveland), who logged in a highlight video type performance.  Guess is athletically gifted and plays above the rim.  The final day match-ups should be competitive and up for grabs in several divisions.

  1. King James 6th grade team 2021 looked very impressive! They stem rolled pool play had had some great battles in the final four and championship games. The family and All Ohio Purple are very good teams!

    1. Buckeye Prep why no coverage on the 6th grade division of the Nike Grassroots? I know King James won but no info on AOR 2012.

  2. Austin Speed (5'9/PF/C/2021/Solon, Ohio) from All Ohio Red 2021 had 15 points, 20 rebounds and 2 blocks in Sundays 8 am game. The kid has great potential!

  11. Sorry Rob! Only to defend/protect my family, our boys from lies. Hey @ anonymous I'm coach of Buckeye Prep 6th grade!!! We are a legit 12u!! Thnks for paying so much attention it means we are getting better!!! I've been preparing the boys for this hate also!!! So thanks 4 showing them!!! Since u think u kno so much please talk!!! Who on our team is old??? At this date we still have 4 11yr olds... Including my son wit a late June bdate!!! So y would I keep older players??? Please post & put ur name to it so every1 knos who the hater is... My email is arbrown729@yahoo.com if u want a copy of schedule so u can waste $ protesting!!! Or follow us at every event. We have a team mom/sec wit our book wit AAU cards!!! We will gladly take that donation!!! When u check please bring ur whole team & families so they can see also!!!!

We have never played for wins or individual recognition!! Only for our own development!! To get better, our 1st tourney we played 7th grade, then the ultra competitive NYBL!!! All vs. older kids to prepare us for what we want!!! I'm sorry this was our 1st weekend playing close to normal age/size/skill kids!!! Yes, we where in final 4 & purple beat us up!! Not a big deal!! We been playing the same purple since 2nd grade & never won!!!
We take our loses wit pride, don't complain bout ages. & just get back in gym!!! Taking the lessons learned!

So see u at States & Nationals!!!! FYI... In 4th grade we placed 7th in D2 nationals. & last year 5th grade 15th!!! With the same core of players!!!

Iron sharpens Iron!!! In practice & games!!! Y'all can't get better or recognition playing on teams just 4 ur kid to shine or trophies!!!

There's levels to this too!!! That's y for now we stay in our lane wit D2. We are close to making the jump, but the intensity of the high D1 teams are even too much 4 us at times... So See u in the gym!!!. Keep watching!! Over the next couple years you will see there growth even more!!! If u like u can always get with me & watch how hard the boys are working!!!!

  14. it is very laughable how individuals (who cant win with their thrown together teams) claim other SUCCESSFUL teams are 'cheating' with older kids or kids that do not meet the age requirements... there is only one solution for such claims---> GET BETTER... what joy does one get in making false claims on other teams/organization. STOP finding excuses as to why your team can not make it on the circuit, you are excusing the work ethic of the coach and your childs lackluster play... basketball might not be for him; there are plenty of other sports-- bowling, badminton, tennis, golf, rugby, lacrosse... have at it. the world is yours :-) there are coaches/teams who actually take pride in this thing called AAU and work hard it only for people such as "anonymous" to hate and ATTEMPT to discredit all that has been done to reach such heights of success. focus on your child and your team and all will be right with the world... be easy & stay breezy. peace love and hairgrease
