Buckeye Prep Invitational-Final Day Report

Queen City Prophets -7th Grtade Champions

 The final day of the 2013 Buckeye Prep Invitational featured many of the tournament’s top seeds and those teams that were favored to win their respective divisions. One of the best championship games of the day featured a rematch between the Queen City Prophets (QCP) and Kevin Jackson’s Murphy AC squad. If you recall, QCP held off a late charging Murphy AC to win the Nike Grassroots tournament 2 weeks ago. Unlike the last time theses 2 teams met, the game was tight from the opening tip. At half time the score was 35-33 in favor of QCP. Murphy AC scored first coming out of the break. The game was all locked up at 42 at the 9:37 mark and about that time, Jerry Higgins had to go to the bench with his 4th foul. With about 4 minutes left in the contest, and without EJ Williams on the floor due to foul trouble, QCP went on a spurt. However, Murphy AC refused to lie down, and tied the game at 66 with 1:40 left. After an EJ Williams layup, free throw and put back by Xavier Peters, QCP would win their 3rd tournament of the young AAU season. EJ Williams had another monster game with a game-high 22 points, followed by Xavier Peters’ 19 and Kane Cooper’s 12 points. Jerry Higgins paced Murphy AC with 20 points, while Coryon Rice added 14 and Yael Hill contributed 12. Kane Cooper was named MVP, and Williams, Peters, Dwayne Cohill Jr. and Coryon Rice all were named to the All-Tournament Teams. Simply a great game that featured many of the state’s top players. Their path to the title included wins over the Cincinnati Vikings and Dayton Metro. At this point in the season, with 3 tournament champions under their belts already, I think it’s safe to say it; the Prophets are the #1 seventh grade team in the state.

Next Level-8th Grade Champions

Another very competitive game involved an 8th grade showdown between Brooks Hall’s Next Level team and John Atkins’ M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs. This game was played at a very high level with several players who will likely be playing college ball in a few years. The game was nip and tuck until late in the second half when Next Level’s size started to cause major problems for the Mustangs. With a front court of L’Christian Smith, Ethan Bradds and Ryan Proffit, Next Level simply has too much beef in the paint for most teams. Next Level would defend their 2012 Buckeye Prep Invitational title with a 62-55 victory. L’Christian Smith continued to dominate with a game-high 22 points, followed by 16 from Ethan Bradds. Tim Dalton led the Mustangs with 18 points, followed by Trenton Russell with 13, 11 from Kurlan Brown and Colin Miller with 9 points. Danny Davis received MVP honors, while L’Christian Smith, Ethan Bradds, Trenton Russell and Collin Miller were all selected to the All-Tournament Team. On their trek to the championship game, Next Level defeated Hidden Gems and Saginaw Elite (MI).

Team Teague-6th Grade Champions

In the 6th grade championship game the Indianapolis-based Team Teague faced off with the Cleveland area based SMAC. The contest was all about runs and multiple ties and lead changes. Team Teague raced out to a 7-0 lead, but SMAC answered with a 7-0 run of their own to tie the game at 7 apiece. Just when you thought Team Teague was going to run away the game, SMAC responded with another run to close the gap. By halftime, the score was 30-29 in favor of Teague. Team Teague scored first to start the second period, but SMAC answered right back to tie the game at 33. About midway through the second half Team Teague’s superior talent and depth took control of the game. At one point, Team Teague started putting on a show on their way to a 61-49 win and the 6th grade title. Team Teague enjoyed balanced scoring as 4 players finished with double digit scoring, including: J. Franklin (12), Willie Jackson (11), A. Franklin (11) and Chris Robinson (10). SMAC was led by Kyi Wright who finished with 13 points, followed by Mike Bekelja with 12 and Trevor Soltis with 10 points. Team Teague’s Dan McKeeman took home the MVP award, and Willie Jackson, Chris Robinson, Mike Bekelja and Kyi Wright all got the All-Tournament Team nod. Team Teague beat Truth Basketball and Dayton Elite prior to the final game. I have to give a special shout out to Kyi Wright who played fantastic the 2 games I watched him play. Wright is a big body with great footwork and the ability to finish at a hate rate at a very young age. He’s a Pittsburg, PA. kid, but I plan to track his progress.

Mid Ohio Pumas-5th Grade Champions

The Mid-Ohio Pumas squared off against the Ohio Basketball Club in the 5th grade championship game. The Pumas got out of the gates quickly with a 9-4 lead, but OBC responded with a mini run to close the gap. But with 4:11 left in the period, the Pumas extended the lead 16-7. The second half was a different story, as the Pumas would seize control of the game. As a team, the Pumas play excellent defense and they do a great job of closing off driving lanes. On the strength of their defense, the Pumas claimed the championship 40-29. Jack Pugh was the high man for the Pumas with 17 points, and Cade McGlade and Daylon Keeton both finished with 8 points. Jack Santa-Emma was named MVP, and Jack Pugh, Jake Curl, CV Charleston and Kenneth McElrath were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Team Teague JTO All-Stars-4th Grade Champions

I did not get the chance to sit down and watch the game, but Team Teague’s 4th grade squad got it done with a 46-38 win. The game was close early, but Kim Felder’s team is good, which is what it would take to beat a quality team like the Pumas. Team Teague JTO All-Stars got an explosive performance out of Caleb Furst who dropped a gaudy 24 points in the win. Right behind him in scoring was Luke Goad who added 12 points. Furst was named MVP, while Pierce Thomas, Darion Smith, Luke Goode and Malcolm Chandler all made the All-Tournament Team.

In the high school divisions, All-Ohio Black defeated the Toledo Ruff Riders 55-51 in the 9th grade championship game. Mike Pryce led All-Ohio with a game high 15 points, while D. Duason added 11. Toledo was paced by Keith Smith and his 13 points, with Trey Buford supporting with 9 points. Mike Pryce was the MVP, and the All-Tournament Team included Malik Harrison, Gabe Kinnard, Jalen Foust and Tre' Charles-Martin.

All-Ohio blacked downed the Dayton Net/Buckeye Prep 54-43 to claim the 10th grade title. Grant Zawadzki led all scorers with 14 points. Deshwan Jackson led the Nets with12 points. Xeyrius Williams was named MVP, and Dorrian Dawson, Grant Zawadzki, Deshawn Jackson and Henry Alexander all got the All-Tournament Team call.

Ohio Varsity White got by Elite Skills Select 60-43 to capture the 11th grade crown. Brookhaven’s Ronnie Williams was the big dog for Varsity with a team-high 17 points, while Avery Willaims added 12 and Derek Mekeithen contributed 11 points. K.T. Taylor had a big game with an impressive 26 points outburst. Teddy Metzen took home MVP honors, while Landon Brazile, Avery Williams, Johnell Free and CJ Franklin made the All-Tournament Team.

Also, in conjunction with the NYBL finals here in Columbus on May 31-June 2nd, Buckeye Prep will be holding the End of Summer Showdown for the top middle school teams in the region. This tournament will give teams one last opportunity to fine tune their games before the AAU Nationals. Look for additional information to be published as we get closer to the date.

Buckeye Prep Invitational-Day 2 Report

Day two of the 2013 Buckeye Prep Invitational proved to be very competitive. I started my day off checking out the action at the USA Sports Academy where many of the 8^th grade games were being held. The first game I watched was a matchup between the Atlanta Celtics and Ohio Showtime/OBC.  The Celtics got off to a 4-0 lead before OBC answered with a 5-0 run of their own. The Celtics responded with 6-0 run and closed the half up 16-11. OBC scored first to start the second period and cut the lead to 21-23 at the 9:02 mark. Although OBC would keep the game competitive, the Celtics’ superior size and the play of Jordan Usher (6’3 WF Atlanta) would carry the day, as Atlanta got the 54-50 win. Usher led the Celtics with 21 points, while Javon Graves matched his efforts with 21 points for OBC. I’m starting to see Graves a lot more often and he continues to show me some good things.  Right now, he’s a scorer who excels at getting to the cup.

Jordan Usher-Atlanta, GA

I finally had a chance to see M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs as they faced off against Ohio Hoyas Elite. There is not a whole lot to say about the game, as the Mustangs left no doubt they were the better team. The Mustangs are fundamentally sound; they enjoy balanced scoring and they really pass the ball well. Their roster includes 2 players from Ohio and some guys from Kentucky and West Virginia. The Mustangs were led in scoring by Trenton Russell (6’3 WF Magoffin County, KY).  Another couple of guys to watch include: Michael Karl (6’3 PF/C New Philly, OH), Timmy Dalton and Collin Miller. The stud for the Hoyas was Parker Stewart (6’0 WG Athens) who really shot the ball well from the perimeter.

The Cincinnati Royals have several players who have excelled at the Buckeye Prep Elite Showcases in the past, including the Sichterman brothers, and Matt King. With that kind of talent, there is no wonder they crushed Huntsman Select 58-18. Brooks Hall’s Next Level squad pulled out a close one against the Team Lima Kings on Saturday morning and Dayton L’Christian Smith had a monster 20 point performance to lead all scorers. Ethan Bradds contributed with 14 points, while Danny Davis added 12 points. Lima’s Jarious Ward led the Kings with 18 markers and Dak Prichard added 15 points.

Xavier Peters-Middlestown, OH.

I caught just enough of the Elite Skills Black v Dayton Pilots game to notice that Murphy AC’s Jerry Higgins (7^th grade PG) was playing up in the 8^th grade division.  From what little I saw, Higgins was more than holding his own against the older kids, which exactly what he should be doing when you are one of the top guards in the state. The 7^th grade Queen City Prophets (QCP) were at it again as they dominated Huntsman Select White 90-7 in their first game of the day, and were out in front of Ohio Varsity 31-14 when I walked away.  In the Huntsman’s game, Xavier Peters had a breakout game with 20 points, while Kane Cooper added 14 points and Zarion Davis and EJ Williams finished with 13 and 9 points, respectively. The Peters kid is new on the scene, but people are starting to take note of his size and athleticism. In the Ohio Varsity game, Peters tried to punch one on the break and just barely missed.  It was no fluke; I think the 7^th grader can dunk already. QCP would finish 3-0 on the day to advance to bracket play the winner of Saginaw Elite and the Cincinnati Vikings.

In ninth grade action, the Toledo Roughriders defeated the Dayton Pilots 56-49. Tre' Charles-Martin’s 11 points were the high for Toledo, while Marquez Hargrove paced the Pilots with 8 points. Columbus’ Nova Village got by the Dayton Nest/Buckeye Prep 63-49. Tariq Wright (6’2 WF) led Nova Village with 18 points, while Gahanna’s Nick Ward added 13 and Joe Rowlin finished with 12 points. Dayton’s Trey Landers led the Nets with 14 points.

In the 6^th grade division, Kentucky’s KYWA Magic downed Air Attack 59-34. C. Blair led with 16 points and S. Hart had 10 points.  Air Attack’s Kaleb Martin paced his team with 16 points. Of course I had to check out my 4^th grade Buckeye Prep team. Unfortunately, Prep allowed a big first half  lead (22-6) to evaporate, as the Ohio Hoopster dug down deep and battled all the way back to snatch a 39-35 victory. Anthony Miltner was the high man for the Hoopsters with 12 points, while Jayden Hawkins-White led Buckeye Prep with a game-high 19 points. Finally, the Mid Ohio Pumas notched an early 33-13 win over All-Ohio Black early in the day.

Luke Brand & Anthony Johnson

From my spot at the USA Sports Academy, I made the trek over to Central Crossing High School to catch more 6^th and 7^th grade action. Right when I got there, I saw the conclusion of a 59-29 beat down between Cleveland’s SMAC U and Michigan’s Saginaw Elite. Pittsburgh’s Anthony Johnson (6’0 SG) did most of the damage to the tune of 18 points. Right behind him in scoring was Luke Brand (6’2 C Canton) who added 12 points. For Saginaw Elite, Mike Allen had 12 points and Kwani Moore had 10 points. For the record, SMAC U enjoyed similar results in an earlier game against Dayton Metro.

Team Toledo’s 7^th grade team got by Hidden Gems. Dallas Grant (6’0 WF) led Toledo with 11 points and Christian Smith (6’2 PF) contributed 6 points. I plan to keep an eye on both Grant and Smith, as both guys could be nice prospects going forward. Kevon Allen led Hidden Gems with 12 points. Before I left the gym, the Ohio Hoopsters were beating Team Toledo in their last game of the day.

One of the better games of the day pitted OBC against Truth Basketball. Although OBC had control of the game late, and it appeared they would get the win and advance to bracket play on Sunday, the truth said “not so fast my friend!” The Truth drained a trey with 8 seconds left to go ahead for good.  The final score was 50-49. Camryn Hubbard and Zach Elsany both finished with 12 points, while Alex Heath added 11 points. Ty Wiley led the Hoopsters with 16 points, followed by Jabri Perkins and Eddie Michael with 10 points apiece. The 7^th grade Buckeye Prep squad raced out in front of Nova Village in game 3 of the tournament and never really looked back.  The game was respectable early, but Prep would later press on the gas coast to a lopsided 50-22 victory. Big Walnut’s Kaleb Phillips put in work in the paint and paced Prep with 15 points, while Gahanna’s Chase Rankin added 10 points in support, and Garrett Tipton finished with 9 markers.

Tier 1 got out of the gates quickly, and before they could catch their breath, the Capital City Force was down 16-0. It was not until the 8 minute mark until Capital City got on the board. By half time, Tier 1 was up 32-17. Since the outcome of the game was going to be obvious, I set out in search of a more competitive game. I found what I was looking for with Dayton Metro vs Saginaw Elite. Dayton Metro’s 7^th grade team pulled out a close one against Saginaw Elite 42-42. I know Saginaw went down, but Tray Garrett’s 21 points in the losing effort was still impressive.

  

The 6^th grade division was a story of the “haves” and the “have nots,” as there were several blowout games. SMAC demolished Indiana’s Team Blaze Select.  I did not catch the final score, but when a team has you down 30-2 at half time, it’s really about time to start warming up the bus! Add Huntsman Select’s 6^th grade squad to the list of shame, as they were knocked out by Indiana’s Team Teague. As was the case with the SMAC game, Team Teague was up 62-14 at the break.  Needless to say, I did not hang around to catch the final score. The Murphy AC versus Dayton Elite game was close at half time (20-18), but Dayton would later break it open and cruise to a comfortable 61-42 victory. Finally, Kentucky’s KYWA Magic edged by the Ohio Rising Stars 50-51. Andre Gordon had another good game, finishing with 12 points, followed by Ratez Roberts with 10 points. Terrell Strickland led Kentucky with 12 points and Titus Ransom added 9 markers. Stay tuned tomorrow as we highlight the final day results.

Buckeye Prep Invitational-Day 1 Report

Buckeye Prep vs Tier 1 Sports

Day one of the Buckeye Prep Invitational tipped off on Friday night at 2 locations in Columbus, Ohio. Of the 115 teams entered in this year’s event, approximately 18 teams were in action. The first game I watched was my 7^th grade Buckeye Prep team versus Lima’s Tier 1 Sports. The game was tight from the opening tip and was knotted at 24 at the half. Much like the first period, the second have featured multiple lead changes and ties. However, Buckeye Prep opened up a 10 point lead with about 5 minutes left in the game. But hold on, with about 4 and a half minutes remaining Buckeye Prep’s Seth Goodson fouled out, and that’s when Coach Quincy’s team turned up the defensive pressure. Because Buckeye Prep failed to handle the pressure, Tier 1 converted turnovers to layups and tied the game at 50 at about the 2:05 mark. Buckeye Prep would hold off a hard charging Tier 1 to collect an important 54-52 opening night victory. Despite being relegated to the bench with foul trouble, Seth Goodson led Buckeye Prep with 18 points, while Garrett Tipton added 10 points and Caleb Phillips and Chase Rankin contributed 10 and 8 points, respectively. New to the Tier 1 roster this tournament was Dayton’s Antwuan Johnson who was running with King James only a week ago. The leading scorers were Johnson with 15 points, Coby Kelly with 10 and Jay Kaufman and Nick Morman both with 8 points.

David Fitzgeral-Ohio Hoopsters

Next up was the 7^th grade Ohio Hoopsters and Hidden Gems. Although the game was competitive early, thanks to 11 half time points by Westerville’s David Fitzgerald, the Hoopsters would run the lead to 31-13 by halftime. The second have was not much different, as the Hoopsters continued to dominate an undermanned Hidden Gems squad on their way to a 50-16 win. Fitzgerald would finish with a game-high 15 points; Juan Elmore added a points. Like a lot of teams this early in the AAU season, the Hoopsters had an roster addition of their own. Although Zion White, a 6’5 center from FCI Academy in Columbus, is raw, he’s a big body with a lot of upside once he learns how to play the game.  When I say raw, that’s just what I mean; the kid has only been playing basketball for 1 year, and this is his first year playing AAU ball. It’s very early for White, but it might be a good idea to keep an eye on his development.

Staying with the 7^th graders, Ohio Varsity started the tournament strong with a close 39-36 win over the Dayton Pilots. Isaiah Hairston paced Ohio Varsity with 11 points, while Eaton’s Trace Couch led all scorers with 19 points. Couch is an 8^th grader, but he is young enough to play down at the 7^th grade level. In other action, OBC began the night with a convincing 56-36 victory over the Ohio Hoopsters. Preston Eisnaugle was hot late, as he drained 4 treys in the second half to finish with a game-high 17 points. Ty Wiley added 11 points while Jabari Perkins continued to impress onlookers.

At the request of their coach, Tier 1 played a second game on opening night.  This time, the Lima area team matched up with Columbus’ Nova Village in the night cap. Nova Village drew first blood and actually raced out to an 11-4 lead. However, Tier I battled all the way back, tying the game at 17 by the half. The story in the second half was much different, as the well coached Tier 1 would display their superior talent on their way to a convincing 41-20 victory. Nick Morman led with 7 points, while Antwuan Johnson and BJ Miller added 6 points apiece.

Andre Gordon-Eaton

The Ohio Rising Stars’ 6^th grade squad really put it on an unsuspecting Huntsman Select team that was clearly out manned. So much so, the mercy rule had to be dusted off in the second half. You knew it was going to be a long night for the Urbana based team when they failed to score until the 6:12 mark, before finding themselves down 30-1. The eventual margin of victory would be a gaudy 48-3.  I will give this to Huntsman Select; they never stopped fighting and never hung their heads. Andre Gordon was the big man on campus for the Rising Stars with 16 points, while Michael Kriell added 11 points.

All in all, it was a great day of competition. Tomorrow I will try and catch some more of the 6^th graders and a couple of teams in the 8^th grade division.  I really want to see the M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs, as well as the Cincinnati Royals and the Atlanta Celtics.  In the 6^th grade division, Kim Felder is back on the sidelines with a Jeff Teague-sponsored team (Team Teague JTO All-Stars) who are supposed to be real good. Team Blaze Select, another Indiana-based team may be worth getting a look at, as well as KYWA Magic out of Kentucky, Truth Basketball, and of course Murphy AC. It should be another great day of hoops on day #2!

Buckeye Prep Pool Assignments and Schedule Posted

The field for the 2013 Buckeye Prep Invitational Tournament totals 116 teams, and includes many talented teams from around the Midwest in grades 4th-12th (not enough teams for a 3rd grade division). Below is a link to the pool assignments and the INITIAL DRAFT OF THE SCHEDULE. I call it an initial draft because there will likely be some minor changes between now and when the tournament tips off on Friday. Therefore, it is very important that everybody continue to check for updates between now and then. The final and official schedule will be posted at the various sites, so please make sure you check there when making your travel plans.

There are still a few teams that have not submitted their ENTRY FEES. For those teams, you must report to Ohio Dominican University on Friday night to make full payment. Teams that have not paid their entry fees will not be allowed to play their games until the fees are paid. Also, if you see your team, or any other team for that matter listed on the schedule and you know they are not coming to the tournament, please contact us ASAP!

Also, although several teams made scheduling requests, I could not honor them all. With 116 teams and 4 venues, it’s near impossible to work the schedule to fit everybody’s unique circumstances. Therefore, other than for clear scheduling mistakes on our part (i.e., back-to-back games, missed games, ect), we cannot make any changes to the schedule. Please make the necessary arraignments to play your schedule. Also part of the attachment are the games rules for the tournament. Please read them over carefully before your arrival so there are no misunderstandings.

Every effort has been made to insure that all teams, players, coaches and parents have an enjoyable experience. However, as with any event, nothing is perfect, so please arrive with a positive spirit and a desire to compete at the highest levels. All-Star Saturday Attracts Statewide Talent

West All-Stars-Champions

For the first time in its 15 year history, the All-Star Saturday middle school game featured players from as far away as Cleveland and Cincinnati.  Although the event is traditionally a local event, we decided to upgrade the talent level by selecting the better players from across the state. Also new this year, the game featured a combination of both 7^th and 8^th graders.

East All-Stars

The middle school game was close the entire game, but the West all-stars edged out the East by a score of 67-65. The leading scores for the West included EJ Williams who finished with a game-high 14 points and the MVP nod, followed by Jayvon Graves (13), Darious Coker (10), Tommy Schmock (8), Seth Goodson (7) and Turner Horn (5). The East squad enjoyed more balanced scoring, as Juan Elmore led with 7 points, while 4 other players (Kelvin Calhoun II, Jabari Perkins, Garrett Tipton and Tyrell Ajain) all finished with 6 points. Besides EJ Williams, who showed he could also dominate 8^th graders as well, Jabari Perkins continued to impress this evaluator, and his play on Saturday proved that his performance at the Grassroots tournament last week was no fluke. Look for Perkins to be added to our Top 30 player list when we update it in a few weeks. I also have to mention Cincinnati’s Matt King who flashed surprising athleticism when he threw down a 2 hand banger in transition.

EJ Williams (7th) MVP

The game also spotlighted a match up between the top three 8^th grade point guards in the state with Tommy Schmock, Tyrell Ajain and Keegan Seban. Also, a couple of Ohio’s elite 7^th grade floor generals were in the house with Kane Cooper and Ty Wiley. Finally, I’m going to have to pay more attention to Darious Coker whose super smooth game caught my eye on Saturday. Add Jayvon Graves’ name to that same list, as his play on Saturday put him in MVP consideration

East All-Stars: Keegan Seban, Dylan Dupler, Tyrell Ajain, Matt King, Jay Joseph, Taj Clark, Isaiah Speelman, Garret Tipton, Jabari Perkins, Kane Cooper Kelvin Calhoun II and Juan Elmore.

High School Game Winners

The high school game featured a roster full of high flyers, including South High School’s Omar Diop who wowed the crowd with creative dunks during the slam dunk contest. Led by Reynoldsburg’s Wendell Davis’ game-high 32 points, the West squad got the 105-99 win and bragging rights. The other leading scores for the West included Akron bound Aaron Jackson who finished with 17 points, Deondre Martin who added 14 points and Cyguil Tucker who added 12 points. The top scorer for the East was Beechcroft’s Patrick Ngene who dropped 20 points, followed by Africentric’s Kenny Robinson who had 19 points, Northland’s Armani Towns with 18 and Omar Diop who added 12 markers.

A shout out goes out to Madison Green who took home MVP honors in the 9-11 grade division.  Yes she’s a girl, but she proved that she can ball with the boys! Thanks to all of the players for participating in Saturday’s event.

2013 Buckeye Prep Invitational Tips Off Next Week

The field for the 2013 Buckeye Prep Invitational Tournament is about full and will include over 120 teams from across the region. The grade divisions for the tournament are 3rd-12th. I will start forming the schedule this weekend, so there are still a few days left to register. No teams will be added to the schedule without full payment. Payments can be made using the Pap Pal link located in the upper right hand corner of this website.
