OBC Wins Early Bird Super Showcase

OBC Wins Championship
Congratulations to OBC's 8th grade squad for going undefeated to claim the championship of the Early Bird Super Showcase in Clevland.  On their trek to the title, OBC defeated All-Ohio, Ohio Hoopsters and SMAC U.  In the championship game, OBC defeated SMAC U for a second time in the tournament 80-60.  OBC's 7th grade squad had a big day on Saturday, but after 4 starters were ill on Sunday and could not play, the team fell short if its goal of winning it all.

  1. if we are making excuses for the OBC 7th grade team lets also make note that the SMAC U team finished the Saturday overtime game with 5 guys due to injuries and played the whole game sunday with only 7 kids

  4. SMAC Showtime won the 7th grade division Sunday by beating OBC and Rise High. They also had some kids sick and missing because they were still in school ball.

    1. OBC 7th is loaded and Jackson always does a great job. They will have a great year.I'm sure he would be the first to say that you don't make excuses after a loss.It was a very early tournament so all teams were short on players and practices.SMAC 7th beat OBC 7th and won the championship.I'm not sure how that puts OBC on a different level but ok.

  9. I may be mistaking but didn't I see two or three of the boys pictured with OBC"s 8th team playing on high school teams (freshman or JV) this past winter? If this is so can you do that? How is that helping the kids? Plus you are suppose to win.

  10. If they go to school in Ohio and are legit 8th graders, they are not allowed to play for their high school teams.

  11. Not sure about OBC. But I have seen a few kids playing "down" from their grade level. Keep in mind the age requirement for 8th grade AAU is u cant turn 16 before August 1. That can make for some pretty old "8th" graders

  12. If you are a freshman in high school and playing for your JV team, why would you want to play down against 8th graders? OBC 8th grade has 2 Freshman playing on their 8th grade teams and always has. They have 8th graders playing on their 7th grade teams. Why? tournament was for 8th grade teams, it said nothing about 16U

  13. This is coach Jackson aau basketball is age based and all our players are the correct age to compete. the only way a kid can play down is if he is the correct age so if i have a 9 grader who is 14 and doesnt turn 15 until after august 1 of this year he is allowed to play 14u. thats just playing their age, not like some kids that are held back 1-2 years in the same grade those are the kids aau allows to play as long as they dont turn 16 before august 1. the truth is that my guys are younger than must elite 7 graders now a days

    1. Actually the cutoff date is Septmber 1st. That additional month disqualifies a number of players.

    2. that actually gives them one more month of playing "down" then

  14. What about the kids development? An 8th grader who will be playing high school ball next year should not play against 7th graders all spring/summer to try and get ready for high school. A 9th grader who is already playing high school ball should not play against middle school kids all spring/summer to try and get better. Come on everyone knows this. A 9th grader playing 8th grade or a 8th grader playing 7th grade is wrong.

  15. I guess we will have to agree that we disagree. Think about it with your logic you are saying if a kid starts school early he should not be able to compete with kids of his same age??? your saying its wrong for a 14 year old to compete with other 14 year olds or a 13 year old to compete with other 13 year old??? but its ok if a parent holds a kid back 1 maybe 2 years to compete against younger kids thats ok because as long as their in the same grade thats all that matters.I think that argument is nonsense. As far as our players development goes, I want to thank you for being so concerned about them. I think as a program we at OBC do alright in player development, as all of are players are the top in their class and in their school districts and all of our players probably some the most sought after and recruited players in northeast Ohio.

  16. i think your comparing two different things when you talk about a kid being held back and a kid that decides to play down.

  17. Right. He missed the whole point. no one said anything about kids going to school early or being held back. that's a totally different issue. we all know there are ways to get around everything. it's just a simple question. If a kid in 8th grade is going to play high school basketball next year how is it helping them by playing against 7th graders all summer?

  18. lets all be honest with ourselves here...the talent out there is unbelievable now a days, a kid that's 14 and is young for a freshman in high school. If said kid wants to play with his friends or even play "down" as some are calling it I don't see an issue with it. My reasoning is this: the talent is so deep out there in the these elite tournaments that we're playing in that the talent in the 14u bracket is far superior than that of "local" 9th and even 10th grade brackets.

These are KIDS and basketball is a GAME at the end of the day, first things first they should be having fun, and developing, and sometimes that with their friends. Let them be kids!

  19. Do playing a kid down benefit the kid or the program?

  20. I think it should be age-based and not grade based. That way you have similarly aged kids playing against each other. I have a seventh grader who just turned 14. When he is in ninth grade he will be 15 and he is one of the older kids in his class. I just don't get how a 16-year-old can play an eighth-grade tournament. To me that's not fair, and that shows it's all about winning. If a parent chooses to hold their kid back two years in school so they can have an advantage that should catch up with them when they play AAU ball. Just seems so unfair… Like I would want to mess with my child's life by holding him back and having him two years older than everybody else in his grade. I think too many parents are living vicariously through their kids exploits because they never got to enjoy this level of competition when they were kids. My family is new to the AAU circuit, but I am learning quickly how things operate with some teams.
