Hidden Gems Showcase Recap

All-Showcase Team
After a very long day of basketball, I popped over to Luscious Jones' Spring Showcase to see if I could catch a little of the action.  Although the showcase was just finishing up, I did get the low down on some if the top players at the event.  According to Jones, 80 kids attended the event and were able to showcase their talent to about 12-15 small college coaches.  Some of the programs in the gym included, Ohio Dominican, South Carolina Aiken, Urbana, Wheeling Jesuit, Ohio Wesleyan and Ashland.  Although Jones was a little disappointed with the number of coaches who made the trip (he had about 30 the last event), he was still happy that the event created an opportunity for the kids to get some quality exposure.

Also of note, as evidence that Jones' showcases are know as great exposure opportunities, he had 6 kids from Dublin, Ireland who participated in the event, hoping to catch the eye of college coaches. According to Jones, the top player at the event was Northland's Devon Scott, who was able to shake off a disappointing loss in the state tournament on Saturday night and still perform at his peak.  For his efforts, Scott was selected as the showcase MVP. In addition to Scott, the following players were selected to the All-Showcase team:

Nick Archer
Carter Smith
AJ Ireland
Eric Roby
Jamel Morris
Chris Byrd
Kam Harris
James Young

Trice Named Gatoraide Player of the Year

According to ESPN's Rise Magazine, Huber Heights Wayne's Travis Trice has been name Ohio Gatorade Player of the Year.  Congrats to Travis and his family for this significant accomplishment.   Below is the official press release:

CHICAGO (March 17, 2011) — In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Travis Trice of Wayne High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Ohio Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Trice is the first Gatorade Ohio Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Wayne High School.

The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Trice as Ohio’s best high school boys basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Trice joins an elite alumni association of past state boys basketball award winners, including Dwight Howard (2003-04, SW Atlanta Christian Academy, Ga.), Chauncey Billups (1993-94 & 1994-95, George Washington HS, Colo.), Jason Kidd (1991-92, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS, Calif.), Paul Pierce (1994-95, Inglewood HS, Calif.) and Chris Bosh (2001-02, Lincoln HS, Texas).

The 6-foot, 167-pound senior guard averaged 24.4 points, 7.2 assists, 4.5 steals and 3.3 rebounds per game this past season, leading the Warriors (22-2) to the Division I district final. The 2010-11 Southwest District Player of the Year, he concluded his prep career as Wayne High’s record-holder with 1,555 points.

Trice has maintained a 3.48 GPA in the classroom. A devoted parishioner in his church community, he has volunteered locally as a guest-speaker role model at an elementary school and on behalf of food and clothing drives for the needy.

“I have coached against Travis Trice for four years and he can beat you in so many ways,” said Henry Bias, head coach of rival Kettering Fairmont High. “He can shoot long-range three-pointers with tremendous consistency. He hits pull-up jumpers and drives to the net and gets fouled. He is a fierce competitor and one of the best players I have seen in the area in 20 years.”

Trice has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at Michigan State University this fall.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.

Trice joins recent Gatorade Ohio Boys Basketball Players of the Year Jordan Sibert (2009-10, Princeton), C.J. McCollum (2008-09, GlenOak), and B.J. Mullens (2007-08, Canal Winchester) among the state’s list of former award winners.

Northland Advance to Regional Final

With their 57-52 win over the Gahanna Lincoln Lions, the Northland Vikings booked their spot in the Regional Finals on Saturday, where they will face the winner of the Westerville South v Lakota East semi-final game.  As expected, the game was close until the final minutes of the contest, and ffeatured multiple ties and lead changes. The Vikings led at the end of each quarter, including a 1 point lead (31-30) going in to the half. The game was still up for grabs late, as the score was as close as 52-54 with 17 seconds remaining.  The difference in the game was the stellar play of Trey Burke, who played every minute of the game, and led his team with a game-high 27 points. Jordan Potts finished with 12 points, followed by Devon Scott (10). Gahanna was led in scoring by Jamel Morris who scored a team-high 13 points, followed by Trey Warr (12) and Stevie Taylor (11). Gahanna Clams Back-to-Back District Championships

With only one starter returning for the Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions this year, a chance at consecutive district titles seem remote to most people. Gahanna’s improbable season rolled on last night with a 47-44 win over the Walnut Ridge Scots. The game was tight from tip, and was not decided until the waning minutes of the contest. The half time score was only 20-20, as both teams concentrated on the defensive end of the game.

Walnut Ridge appeared to have the advantage until Stevie Taylor finally got on track midway through the 4th quarter with back-to-back treys. A big steal by Gahanna’s Taylor at the 30 second mark put the Golden Lions ahead. Austin Traylor traveled on the Scots’ next possession and Taylor got the inbound pass and was quickly fouled. Taylor would eventually hit both free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give Gahanna a 47-44 lead. Ridge inbounded the ball, dribbled to half court and called a time out. Coming out of the timeout, Ridge inbounded the ball and drove the lane for a kick out trey for Reco Spears. Spears’ game-tying trey came up short, giving Gahanna back-to-back district championships.

Stevie Taylor finished with a game-high 19 points, followed by Jamel Morris (9) and Brandon Smith (7). The Scots were led in scoring by Austin Traylor (11) and Isiah Brooks (8). Next up for Gahanna is a rematch with the Northland Vikings on Wednesday.  On Thursday, Westerville South will face Cincinnati's Lakota East for a spot in the regional finals.  To view some of the photos I took at the game, visit the Buckeye Prep facebook Fan Page. Northland Holds off Central to Claim Title

Most of the fans in attendance at the Fairground Coliseum to watch the Northland Vikings face off against the Westerville Central Warhawks were probably expecting a blowout victory for the one loss Vikings. As we know now, the game was anything but that, as Westerville was in the game up until the final horn sounded, and had a legitimate chance at coming away with the victory. In fact, Central was up 61-62 with 15 seconds left in the game. From there, Northland’s Trey Burke received an inbounds pass, drove the length of the court and drew a foul. Burke converted both free throws to put the Vikings ahead 63-62 with 8.1 ticks remaining. Coming out of a Westerville time out, Lavonte Justice was fouled , and he calmly sank both freebis to put Northland up for good with 2 seconds left. Central’s last second heave had no chance, as Northland claimed consecutive district titles with a 65-62 win.

Trey Burke led all scorers with a game-high 19 points; Jalen Robinson finished with 15 and Devon Scott added 14. For the Warhawks, Quinton Henderson and Kam Harris had great games, and finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Northland will now face the Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions on Wednesday in the regional semi-finals. Many central Ohio fans have been hoping for the rematch, since the Lions upset the then #1 ranked team in the country last year to advance to the state final four. This game should be a good one! Westerville South Claims District Title

The Westerville South versus New Albany district championship game last night represented a rematch, as South defeated New Albany earlier in the season at home by about 10 points. Because Sam Davis’ club played the Wildcats close on the road, there was every reason to believe the Eagles could get the win on a neutral court. Westerville South controlled the opening tip and drew first blood with a Treavon Jackson Layup. New Albany answered right back with a jumper by Ryan Mayle. The Eagles took their first lead (7-5) at the 4:20 mark, but South knotted the game at 7-7. An Isiah Rogers steal, dish and layup from Ben Jones led to 9-7 South lead with 3:10 left in the opening quarter. The Wildcats would eventually run the lead to 16-9 to end the first quarter.

New Albany scored on their first possession to start the second period to close the gap to 15-11. From there, South went on a 5-0 run and increased the lead to 20-11, before Davis called a timeout at the 6:15 mark. Coming out of the time out, Ben Jones scored on a layup to increase the South lead to 22-11. By the 4:00 mark, Westerville enjoyed a comfortable 27-13 lead. By the end of the quarter, South had ballooned the the lead to17 points (37-20)

The Eagles scored on their first possession to start the second half, but South answered back (37-23). By the 2:01 mark, New Albany had cut the lead to 7 points (36-43). A Ryan Mayo trey with 1:10 left in the period cut the lead to 39-46. Later, New Albany’s Nick Sosh sunk 2 free throws with 32 seconds remaining in the period to cut the South lead to 6 points (46-41). With time running out, Westerville’s Ben Jones hit a layup to finish the first period 48-41.

Ben Jones continued his hot shooting, and his jumper at the 7:25 mark increased the South lead to 51-43. The Wildcats went on a mini run, as Jones converted consecutive jumpers to keep New Albany at bay. South would go on to claim their third district championship in school history. The star for the Wildcats was Ben Jones who dropped an impressive 23 points on the night. Treavon Jackson added 13, Stephen O'Daniel contributed 12 and Zeek Rogers finished with 8. For the Eagles, Tom Smotrich led with a team-high 22 points, while Ryan Mayle added 12 points. The difference in this game was the persistent pressure from the Wildcats and their ability to make the Eagles' marksmen uncomfortable.  Westerville will face the winner of the Lakota East v Princeton winner in the regional semi-finals.  To see the pictures I took at the game, visit the Buckeye Prep Facebook Fan Page.

Buckeye Prep Elite Showcase Top Performers

By most accounts, the 2011 Buckeye Prep Elite Showcase was the best ever! Approximately 220 of Ohio’s best middle and high school ballers rolled in Central Crossing High School in Grove City, Ohio to participate in the one-day showcase. Not only did the Buckeye State’s top hoops stars attend the event, kids from as far away as Wisconsin, New York, Michigan and Indiana participated in the action. The competition level in each of the three divisions was fierce, and there were scouting services and the highlight video guys in the house documenting and filming the action. ESPN’s John Stovall was in the gym, as was City League Hoops’ Ty Kish and Cap City Preps.

Top Sophomore
Monty Boykins-2013
Although there were a number of great players in attendance at the showcase, Lakota West’s Monty Boykins clearly established himself as the top 2013 prospect in the gym. Boykins has a super smooth game, is very skilled and can really shoot the rock. From what I hear, Boykins has already been offered a scholarship by Miami of Ohio. In addition to Boykins, you might want to keep an eye on Zach Denny, a 6’0 shooting guard from Valley View High School in the Dayton. Denny had an impressive day and he really had his shoot clicking.

Top Freshman
Chris Sanka Davis-2014
Although Akron Buchtel’s Chris “Sanka” Davis has only lived in Ohio for about 3 weeks, his electrifying play on Sunday puts him in the conversation as one of the top freshmen in the state. Davis, a 6’4 small forward, jumps out of the gym, and he put on a one-man dunk contest the entire the day. Although Davis began his basketball career late, and still has several areas if improvement, but his explosiveness is already big time.

Carlin Dupree-2014
Davis was not the only player with freakish bounce; Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Carlin Dupree put on his own dunking show this past weekend, as he had several highlight dunks of his own. Dupree is a 6’5 combo guard from Bay View High School in Milwaukee. All I can say, I’m glad he made the long trip to Columbus, because he was a pleasue to watch. Some of the other standout performers included: DeAndre Martin, Dejorr Gibson, John Roberts, Javon BessTrajan Seay (Michigan) and Jaylen Tucker. See the list of the other all-stars in the accompanying story.

Top 8th Grader
Amos "AJ" Harris-2015
For most observers in the gym, the top 8th grader at the event was Dayton’s Amos “AJ” Harris. The 5’8 point guard is considered by many to be the top 2015 prospect in the Buckeye state. Harris has a good skill set, is athletic, and plays with a confidence beyond his years. Harris is still developing his jumper, but every other aspect of his game suggests he has next level potential.

Right behind Harris was Springdale’s MaCio Teague, who impressed a lot of observers on Sunday, and played his way onto the all-star team. Although he did not get a Top 5 Award for his his all-star game performance, I'm not sure there were five better 8th graders at the event. The 5’8 guard impressed coaches with his positive attitude and overall game. According to his showcase coach, Teague shot the ball as well as anybody on Sunday, and he used his a tight handle tobeat his man off the dribble and get to cup at will. Bottom line, Teague's upside is tremendous. Huber Height’s D’Mitrk Trice showed great point guard skills and instincts, as did Columbus’ Xavier Holston-Simms and Jalon Lewis. Dayton's Isiah Fairley came late, but when he got there, he hit the ground running.  The 6'3 forward played hard and should be high school-ready by the time he enrolls in Wayne High School next fall. Tyree Kinnel finished the event with a good all-star game showing, while Columbus' Elijah Barber did some real nice things throughout the day. One of the best long-term post prospects in the gym was 6'5 Anthony Anderson from Columbus.  He's not just big, Anderson shows a lot of skill around the bucket. Noah Bramlage, Kyle Ahrens, Robert Martin and Chris Nunn (Indiana) were all impressive as well. See the list of the other all-stars in the accompanying story.

Top 7th Grader
Anthony Christian-2016
The 6/7th grade division was full of talent, and included players as young as 4th and 5th graders. In terms of the 6th and 7th graders, Lima’s Xavier Simpson, Akron’s Anthony Christian and Cleveland’s Trevell Beck were some of the best players I saw on Sunday. Simpson is a veteran of Buckeye Prep showcases, and he continues to build his case as one of the top point men in the state. Also, Simpson’s play in the all-star game earned him MVP honors. According to his showcase coach, Christian was the top 7th grader at the event, and my own observation supported that assertion.  Christian is a good looking prospect with good length and a constant motor, and he did a really god job of finishing around the rim. Beck has the size, athleticism and potential of a big time prospect. Just looking at the kid play, I would be surprised if does not turn into one of the top players in his class. The more I watched this kid play the impressed I was with his game. Keep a eye on this kid, he could be a good one! Hamilton’s Ashon Riggens was a man among boys and logged in an impressive performance as well. Other player to watch included: Jordan Kinchen, Algevon Eichelberger (Michigan), Alec Rhodes, Yerusalem Hill Jr., Trey Jackson, Jalani Rogers, Drew Grombacher. See the list of the other all-stars in the accompanying story.

Top 6th Grader
Jacquel Freeman-6th Grade
Although they are both young and a little undersized, Jacquel Freeman and David Dials Jr. more than held their own against the older players. As only 4th and 6th graders, both point guards are supper quick, aggressive, and proficient at finding open teammates. Despite his age, Freeman played his way into the all-star game. Keep an eye on big EJ Williams, a 6'3 center from Middletown. As is the case with most big men, he still has a lot of work to do, but you can't teach size! I also like what I saw in the play Jeremiah Francis, a 4th grader from Columbus.  Depsite being hounded by older and bigger players, Francis did not back down and appeard comfortable handling the rock.

Stay tuned to this website over the next couple of days, as we will be adding links to highlight videos.  Also, an event recap will be posted on ESPN's website within the next day or two. Also, to see some of the pictures we took at the event, visit the Buckeye Prep Facebook Fan Page. To look inside the showcase click on the highlighted video link. See video #2.
