Top 5 Award Winners |
Although I’m a little late with this piece (caught up in March Madness). I wanted to take a few minutes to recognize a few of the top performance in the 9th, 10th and 11th grade division. Because of the timing of the event, many of the very elite players were still playing with their high school teams; however, there were still some quality players in the gym. Since I have already given a shout out to Sawanee, Georgia’s Eric Hamilton and Peyton Smith in an earlier story, I will start this piece with the all-star game MVP, Dwayne Wilson, a 6’5 junior from Cincinnati. Although a bit undersized for his position, Wilson is strong, athletic with a physical disposition. In fact, one coach described him as a “poor man’s Bake Griffith.” Wilson attacked the rim the entire day and was more than willing to hold down the paint.

Keep an eye on Gage Hisey, a 6’4 180 lb WF at Dublin Coffman. We have seen Hisey on several occasions and it’s clear he is still developing. Blessed with good size, Hisey plays hard and is proficient at scoring the ball. Only a freshman, Hisey logged in significant minutes for Coffman’s varsity squad this season. For his efforts, Hissey not only made the all-star game, he was selected as 1 of 5 MVPs.

Dayton’s Cameron Taylor, a 6’2 sophomore guard at Dayton Northmont, has attended many of our past showcases, but this time out is the first time he had a breakout performance. Taylor has good size for his position, played consistently well all day, and his play last week garnered him all-star and Top 5 honors.

I have to give some props to Cincinnati’s Robert Caldwell, a 5’8 sophomore guard from Dayton Stivers HS. Caldwell, ranked as the #5 rated point guard in the state by John Stoval, is a skilled and crafty floor general who does a good job of managing a team. For his standout performance at the showcase, Caldwell parlayed an all-star spot into Top 5 honors.
