Unfortunately, the Africentric versus Sherwood semi-final game was rescheduled from 6:00 to 5:00. Consequently, by the time I arrived at the gym, the game was already in the third quarter. Although the Nubians began the 4th period with a 42-52 lead, the Eagles applied some serious pressure, and eventually made a late game run to cut the lead to 2 points. Africentric would hold onto the lead on their way to a 64-62 victory over Sherwood to advance to the championship game next Thursday, where they will face off against an undefeated Mifflin squad. The leading scorer for the Nubians was Tony Anderson who scored a team-high 16 points. Shawon Wilson and R. Camara finished with 14 points apiece, while Trevon Potts added 13. The Eagles were led in scoring by Quency Storey, who dropped a cool 21 points in a losing effort. Keep an eye on Storey, this kid is a good looking athlete with size and game to boot. Storey was supported by Azende Johnson and Anthony McKee who finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Also, All-Ohio's Jerry Watson was seen working the crowd looking for players for the upcoming AAU season.
On another note, the Lady Nubians notched another win tonight to punch their ticket to the championship game. When I left at halftime, Africentric held a comfortable 21-11 lead. However, the Berwick Bulldogs made a huge comeback to force overtime. Despite their effort, the Lady Bulldogs went down in defeat by 5 points. Africentric will play Monroe for the City League Middle School Championship. I have to admit, I was really impressed with the play of the Nubian's Dayuna Johnson, a little guard with a ton of talent and a pit bull attitude. I have seen her play twice and both times I left the gym really impressed. The Eagles got a big night from Armani Burke who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
