Revised Middle School Team Rankings

Team Lima Remains the #1 Ranked 8th Grade Team in Ohio

Since the initial team rankings were released a little over a week ago, we have seen some movement in each of the three grade divisions. Murphy AC's championship run in the U-13 DI AAU State Qualifier last weekend was unexpected, and has resulted in their rise in the rankings.  Also, in the same division and the same tournament, a couple of Cincinnati-based teams (Royals & Friars) made enough noise to move up in the rankings as well.  In the U-14 division, the Dayton Heat finished second in the All-Ohio Super Showcase and announced to the big boys in the class that they can play ball. Although there was no major movement in the 6th grade division, the Pickerington Wildcats' second place finish in Cincinnati caught some people by surprise. With that said, at the end of the day, each of our #1 ranked teams retained their crowns for the time being. When the 8th graders tee it up at the DI AAU tournament in a couple of weeks there could be a lot of movement.  It should be a dog fight!

To see the revised rankings, go to the link located on the right side of this website (halfway down).  Click on the Team Lima team picture to see the rankings.  From here on out, updates can be found there. While you are on that side of the website, take the opportunity to look at all of the information contained behind the logos. Finally, I'm just about ready to post my list of the top 30 seventh graders and the top 6th graders in the state. the 7th grade list should be released sometimes next week, and the broader 6th grade list should be released within the next 2 weeks.  Right now, I have published a list of about 100 plus 7th graders which can be found on the right hand column of the website.  Please use the comment section below to comment on the team ranking (keep it positive!), and to speculate who will/should be in the 6th and 7th grade rankings. Remember, the rankings are designed to stimulate conversation, create a community forum for debate. No disrespect is intended, and credible information is always welcome.

  1. Rob T, how are the Lakers ranked #4 when they beat the Dayton Heat by 20 in the bearcat classic and beat the AOE by 1 at King James......

  2. I think you have a valid point, but as you can see, the rankings will change from week to week. Initially, I had All-Ohio Elite ranked #2 ahead of the Lakers, then the Dayton Heat beat them (AOE)in the All-Ohio Super Showcase. Consequently, I felt that since they "recently" beat #2, they deserved to jump ahead of them (AOE). The Lakers only dropped because the Heat rose. With the AAU State tournament tipping off next week, things will surely change. I still like the Lakers, and they will have a chance to build their case again next week. It may not be perfect, but that was the "method to my madness."

  3. Understand that the rankings change but if you have TNBA East in the rankings you need to have Murphy AC Kalish who beat them twice and I believe also beat SMAC Primetime! Definitely not a top 5 team but for sure top 10!

  4. If you are looking for the Top 30 7th graders in Ohio, you probably need 10 from the Northeast and would want at least 4 from Murphy AC Knights (Jaylen Harris, Tommy Schmock, Matt Davet, Sean Coyne), 3 from DB Hoops Martin (Jonathan Williams, Derek Koch and Naz Bohannon), Buckeye Prep showcase standout Tommy Grogan, the best big man around Logan Hill(DB Hoops Slifka), and the real big man 6’8” 280 lb Malique Burton from the Cheetahs. Don’t know the rest of the state well enough, but I will be coming out with my top 10 Northeast 6th graders tomorrow.

  6. That's a fairly accurate list of northeast Ohio talent, but Daesean Brooks & Deuce Martin (DB Hoops Martin) over Sean Coyne & Tommy Grogan

  7. Let's not forget 6'5 (7th grader) Calvin Calhoun (DB Hoops Martin) from Northeast Ohio

  9. Next 5 7th graders Northeast Ohio: Deuce Martin, Sean Coyne, Naz Bohannon, Derek Koch , Calvin Calhoun. Another GREAT starting 5. Murphy AC Knights and DB Hoops Martin have been the best Northeast Ohio 7th grade teams all year. Their rosters of top players confirm that.

  10. With all due respect to some of the other commentators, DB Hoops did have a lot of talent and was by far the 2nd best team in the northeast. But this was Murphy’s year, and DB should not have more players in the top 10 than Murphy. Murphy had by far the most talent. In addition to Harris, Schmock, Coyne and Davet, Murphy players like Nick Koler, Collin Goodfellow and AJ Robinson should be considered – maybe even Connor Adams. And the one player both Murphy and DB wanted was Tommy Grogan – he would have helped both teams.

  11. The 7th grade talent in southeast ohio is better than the talent in northeast ohio. Look at the team ranking most of the teams are from the southeast. If someone could get the best players out of the southeast and creat a team with the top players out of that area they would win state and compete nationally. But there is just too many teams in southeast ohio 7th grade.

  13. 6th grade- Excel beat your #1 AOP in the championship game this weekend in the Bill Hensley Run-n-slam memorial tournament

  14. I agree that the top 2 or 3 teams in each age group should probably have four players in the top 30. But the others should have no more than two. I would also like to see some geographic diversity with strong representation from each region.
